Your Photographic Journey: Where to Begin

January 4, 2020 BPW Team
Your Photographic Journey.png

You’ve got the camera and you’re excited to get started—now what? Figuring out where to begin can feel daunting, especially if you look to the internet for help…so many articles, so many videos! The BPW has got you covered with our fun, casual photography workshops. We’ve created a map of our touchstone classes so you can build your photography toolkit and visualize your path based on your goals and skill level.

1. Learn your camera

Your journey starts here. Get your camera off the shelf and into your hands with these classes designed to help you master your settings and dive right into photography.

  • Digital Cameras I

    • Three settings is all it takes to control the brightness and darkness of your photos. In this class, we will take you step-by-step through taking photos in manual mode and controlling each of those three important settings. You will walk away with a deeper understanding of the capabilities of your camera and say goodbye to auto mode forever!

  • Better Composition Photo Walk

    • Take a walk with us around Boston to practice using manual settings and learning how to “see”. Our instructor will introduce you to some fun compositional rules that will challenge you to try new things with your photography and be more intentional when you click that shutter button.

  • Night Photography

    • Learn how to apply your knowledge of manual settings to create cool, crisp nighttime images. Meet us in different locations around Boston to get hands-on practice with long exposure, get creative with light trails, and learn to how to utilize a tripod to help you make the most out of low-light conditions.

Bonus class: For photographers who want to practice composition and have an added passion for food (like we do), check out one of our favorite beginner classes, Food Photography I.

2. Improve your photos

You’re comfortable with the basics and you’re ready to push your images to the next level.

  • Lightroom Classic I

    • Editing isn’t cheating, it’s maximizing the potential of your photos! We will guide you through the organizational and editing tools of Lightroom Classic software to prepare you for managing your growing photographic library. Then we will introduce you to the best tools to improve the brightness, color, texture, and overall mood of your images.

  • Digital Cameras II

    • Take a deep dive into new compositional rules, visualize the impact of changing your white balance, understand the interaction of color and light, and have some fun playing with autofocus points. This class introduces you to more complex technical aspects of your camera. Oh and don’t forget our favorite part—help yourself to our BPW lens buffet to see firsthand the impact different lenses have on your photography.

Bonus class: Our intermediate level Portraiture class is the perfect way to practice your photographic eye for composition and experiment with new subject matter.

3. Explore & Create

Grow your skillset with more specialized classes aimed at challenging you to create all different types of photos.

  • Flash & Studio Lighting

    • Lighting is an integral element of photography and this class will help you master it. Understand how different types of light affect your images, learn to identify light source and direction, and tackle a variety of lighting set-ups in our studio.

  • In-Depth Workshops

    • Our In-Depth Workshops are dedicated to exploring specific photographic topics like Black and White Photography and Macro Photography. Put the notes aside, challenge yourself, and just focus on creating and utilizing a range of skills in your toolkit. Want to take it even further? Learn an entirely new method of photography by shooting the Milky Way with us in our Astrophotography Weekend or One Night Astrophotography workshops.

Bonus classes: Unlock more tools to help you with getting the most out of your images with our advanced editing classes Lightroom Classic II and Adobe Photoshop.

You’re ready to take the next step.

Take a closer look at any of the classes above or get the full picture of what’s to come on our upcoming class calendar. We can’t wait to help you on your way to creating fantastic photographs!

From Snapshots to Something More: A Beginner’s Guide to Creative Photography

At some point, most photographers run into the same feeling. You’re out with your camera, taking photos… but nothing really sticks. You get home, scroll through them, and think:

“These are fine… but why don’t they feel like anything?” That’s usually the moment where things start to shift.

You stop just taking photos of what’s in front of you—and start wondering how to make something out of it. If you’ve been curious about creative photography or how to tell more of a story with your images, this is a good place to start.

The good news is, you don’t need better gear or more technical knowledge. Most of the time, it comes down to how you approach what you’re photographing.

Here are a few simple ways to begin:

Gear We Love: Cameras 2026
December 17, 2025

It’s that time of year again when many photographers—new and experienced—start thinking about upgrading their camera gear. At the Boston Photography Workshops, we spend the entire year teaching with, testing, and talking about cameras, so when we publish this list, it’s grounded in real-world use, not just spec sheets.

One big change this year: prices. Between inflation, supply chain hiccups, and ongoing tariffs, camera prices have crept up across the board—and yes, that’s a bummer. Because of that, this year we’re recommending a mix of cameras you can buy new and cameras we strongly suggest looking for on the used market.

As always, our goal isn’t to tell you what’s “trendy,” but what will actually help you learn, grow, and enjoy photography.

Behind the Lens: Death Valley 2025

At the beginning of 2025, our students at BPW had the exciting opportunity to explore Death Valley National Park and photograph the stunning views of Mesquite Dunes and Zabriskie Point. With a fun, close-knit group of students and excellent instructors guiding us, we had a fantastic time capturing images of Badwater Basin (the salt flats), Dante's View, Artist's Palette, and the Rhyolite ghost town.
