Welcome to the BPW

Learn more about your BPW experience

At the BPW, we want to make your camera less confusing and remove any guesswork from taking photos. We also want to make the process of learning about your camera safe and fun! We’ve spent years learning how to best teach photography to everyday folks and here’s what we’ve learned:

  • Be kind, thoughtful, and explain things clearly.

  • Community is key. Learning with others helps us expand our knowledge and perceptions.

  • Keep it small. Small groups help us keep learning personal and focused.

Keeping Our Community Safe

The health and safety of our BPW community is a priority for us. All of our workshops go above and beyond state issued guidance, with physical distancing and sanitation protocols in place for every workshop (indoor or outdoor). To learn more about our procedures and response to Covid-19, check out our up-to-date resource page.

Our Classroom

Midway Performance & Production Lab

  • We operate out of a spacious studio located in the Midway Artist Studios building (15 Channel Center Street).

  • Individual desks and chairs are provided for each student spaced 6-feet apart.

    • Each desk is equipped with individual hand sanitizer bottles and a tissue box.

    • Desks are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized after each use by our staff.

  • Class sizes have been reduced to no more than 8 students for in-studio classes.

  • Proper ventilation ensured through open windows and doors. Fans are also provided in the space to improve airflow.

Our Staff

The Boston Photography Workshops is a growing creative studio founded by Chris Sanchez, a professional photographer, artist, and teacher. The BPW strives to inspire photographers and all creative people to move beyond camera frustrations and start creating amazing images. With simple, fun, and effective instruction, we look to make all of our photography classes the first step on your creative journey.

  • Founder & Lead Instructor. Chris is originally from Portland, Oregon, but has been in Boston for 15 years. He enjoys cold weather and quiet forests so he's often drawn up to the Maine region. A creative person driven to better understand the world around him, he loves to learn about science, culture, the arts, and his fellow humans. He also has a problematic relationship with sweets and loves funfetti cake.

  • Instructor. Though born and raised in Boston, Anthony's favorite thing to do is travel and explore new places with his camera. When not traveling for photos, Anthony travels for food - vegan food that is! Always flexible, he grew up doing gymnastics and loves to break out a hand stand whenever he gets the chance - whether that's while leading our DC1 class so our students have a dynamic photo opportunity, or while on his skateboard that he's teaching himself to ride this summer.

  • Brand Director. Originally from Virginia, Kathrin works on the brand marketing for the BPW. She is also a full-time freelance copywriter for the higher education industry and has written for 60+ colleges around the world. Kathrin photographs travel, food, and her family (mainly daughter, Elly, and husband/BPW founder, Chris). She also loves to cook, but thinks cilantro tastes like soap.

  • Instructor. Haley is originally from Florida but escaped up to Boston to attend Boston University (and for the fall leaves, of course). She is a passionate 35mm photography hobbyist and hopes to have her own darkroom some day. In normal circumstances Haley loves to work as a producer for photography related events, but quarantine has allowed her to focus more on independent projects like product photography and the occasional self-portrait.

  • Studio Assistant. A recent transplant from Albuquerque, New Mexico, Anna grew up in Nashville, Tennessee. She graduated from Colorado College with a degree in Art History. She’s drawn to art spaces that are accessible and community driven. In her downtime she likes to play ultimate frisbee, make fiber art, and enjoy nature. Fun fact: she once had a job as a goat-milker, milking up to 6 goats a day!

  • Instructor. Monica Hamilton is a graduate of Skidmore College where she studied photography and printmaking. Focused mainly on portraiture, Monica creates staged, surreal scenes driven by a narrative that is often autobiographical. Additionally, Monica loves to cook, put stickers on almost everything she owns, exclusively drink out of an open mug (even on the go), and is a big fan of the color blue.

  • Instructor. Sami grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland and has lived in Boston since graduating with a degree in Art History and Museum Studies. She loves reading memoirs & mystery novels, drinking coffee, and nerding out about art & museums with anyone who will listen. Sami loves photographing extraordinary details of ordinary places, but portraiture is her first love. She is an aspiring dog mom and spends her time loving Lola the studio dog until she has one of her own.

  • Studio Manager & Instructor. Maria was born in Morocco but has not missed a single major nor'easter in Boston (she would not have it any other way). Photography means a lot to her because it's a means to communicate accessible and universal messages to people across different cultures and generations. She is obsessed with urban, resilient animals such as possums and raccoons.
