Time-lapse Photography for Beginners

Learn to create a captivating time-lapse


A time-lapse is a series of still images come to life. See how filmmakers, photographers, and other artists create awe inspiring and time bending art works using just a camera, tripod, and a computer. Believe it or not, anyone can do it!

Learning to make time-lapses can be broken down into two segments: “capture” and “post-production”. In this workshop students will be guided through both aspects with in-person and hands-on, learning tools. You’ll finish with critically important experience and technical know-how. And.. have some fun learning!

Pre-Workshop :

  • Recommended: Time-lapse Explained (Online): Students will be introduced to important steps that comprise the time-lapse photography process. This will include a a critical walk thru of making a time-lapse, what gear you’ll need, and how to best prepare. Students will also receive practice photos with which to practice making their own time-lapse before the in-person portion of the workshop.

  • This online class is available as a recording for those who cannot attend the livestream

In-Person Workshop:

  1. Hands on Learning: Meeting at our studio and after brief introductions, we’ll review the essential steps and make an easy and fun timelapse inside. The group will then depart for a nearby location in and around the Seaport area to capture an outdoor time-lapse. With instructors on hand, students will learn the key methods to create the best possible time-lapse.

  2. Editing: After a brief meal break, we'll review the necessary steps to organize image files, then begin using software to process the images into time-lapses. We’ll review ways to improve and enhance our clips using simple but helpful tools.

  3. Continued Engagement: After the class concludes students will receive resources to continued feedback from the instructors and their fellow students.

Recommended:

Requirements:

  • DSLR, mirrorless, or advanced point & shoot camera that has "manual mode"

  • Spare battery (important)

  • Laptop computer (for editing portion of the class)

  • Adobe Lightroom Classic (free trial link here)

  • Free time-lapse software: (LRtimelapse)

  • An intervalometer (information will be emailed on this item)

  • A sturdy tripod (at least 24” in height)

Recommended: 

  • Comfortable shoes (~1 miles of walking)

  • 2 lens options

  • Notepad and pen/pencil

  • An ~8-16 stop ND filter for your lens (information will be emailed on this item)
