Five days. One incredible city. The Golden Gate at blue hour, morning fog on the bay, wild parrots on the Filbert Steps, and a sunset from Twin Peaks you won't forget.
This isn't a highlights reel. It's a real photography workshop in one of the world's most visually layered cities, on foot, by cable car, and across the bay to Marin. We've mapped the route, scouted every location, and built in time to actually enjoy being in San Francisco. Your only job is to show up with your camera.

What to Expect
Over five days you'll work through the city's most photogenic corridors with experienced instructors by your side, from the Ferry Building at dawn to Twin Peaks at dusk, with the Golden Gate from Battery Spencer somewhere in between.
Each day has a distinct theme: street and architecture, coastal landscapes, human interest, and a golden hour that pulls everything together. You'll build a complete portfolio of one of America's great cities, not just a collection of postcards.
Small group format. No more than 8 photographers. Plenty of 1:1 time. And built-in breathing room to wander, eat well, and actually experience the place you're photographing.
San Francisco's hills are real. We've designed the itinerary with that in mind. The early days are largely flat and the later days include some terrain, but our group van will be utilized for those occasions.
Why Visit in May?
May is quietly one of the best months to photograph San Francisco. The summer fog that defines June and July hasn't settled in yet, which means cleaner morning light, more consistent visibility across the bay, and better odds of a clear sunset over the Golden Gate.
Daytime temperatures run in the low-to-mid 60s — comfortable for a full day of walking with a camera bag. Golden hour stretches past 8pm, giving the group plenty of time to shoot into the evening without rushing. And the city itself is in a sweet spot: busy enough to feel alive on the streets, quiet enough that you're not fighting tourist crowds at every location.
We've timed this workshop deliberately. May gives us the best version of San Francisco.

Who This Workshop Is For
This workshop is designed for beginner, intermediate, and returning photographers. If you want to push into advanced territory, your instructors are happy to go there with you.
To get the most out of the experience, we ask that you arrive comfortable with:
Manual exposure settings on your camera (shutter speed, aperture, ISO)
Basic composition. You don't need to be an expert, just curious.

Physical Requirements:
This workshop explores San Francisco by foot, public transit, van, and ferry. Participants should expect to walk at least a mile per day on paved surfaces. San Francisco's famous hills are mostly navigated by van or cable car, not on foot — your legs will thank us.
PS: Solo travelers are always welcome. Our groups have a way of feeling like old friends by the end of Day 1.
Recommended Equipment
During the trip we'll visit multiple locations and encounter a wide variety of photo opportunities.
Amazing images can be made with almost any camera. Here's a general sense of what to plan for:
· Digital SLR or mirrorless camera
· Sturdy tripod (essential for Battery Spencer and Twin Peaks)
· Wide-angle lens (~10–24mm)
· Standard zoom lens (~24–70mm)
· Telephoto zoom lens (~70–200mm)
· ND filters
· 2–3 camera batteries
· 2–3 memory cards
· Laptop with editing software
· Medium-weight windproof jacket and sturdy walking shoes
· Layers — Marin and Twin Peaks run 10°F cooler than the rest of the city
After registration, students receive a detailed gear guide. At an additional cost, one-on-one virtual prep sessions with your instructors are available before the trip.

A group editing session where we work through your best shots from the week, culling, organizing, and bringing your images to life.
+ One-on-one guidance on your personal goals and gear.
Projected Itinerary
The workshop begins the morning of May 11th and concludes at midday on May 15th. Our exact itinerary will be shaped by weather and lighting conditions. The schedule below is an example of what to expect.
Day 1: The Waterfront & Financial Core
Street photography, architecture, and iconic skyline compositions. The gentlest day, mostly flat, a great warm-up.
Start at the Ferry Building when morning light hits the clock tower and the bay is at its most active. Walk north along the Embarcadero to Pier 7, an underrated gem with some of the best Bay Bridge compositions in the city. After lunch, the afternoon moves to the Salesforce Transit Center, a masterclass in architectural photography with a rooftop park and abstract light on Level 2. We close the day winding through Chinatown via the Dragon Gate. Dinner in Chinatown or North Beach.
No van today. Mix of walking and public transit along the Embarcadero.
Day 2: Presidio, the Bay & Marin Headlands
Landscape, long-distance vistas, and coastal light. The van earns its keep.
An early start to catch soft morning light at the Palace of Fine Arts, then a short walk to Crissy Field for an unobstructed Golden Gate view at sea level. Mid-morning we drive into the Presidio to work Battery Boutelle and Battery Godfrey, where the concrete batteries frame the bridge towers in a way the visitor center can't match.
In the afternoon we cross to Marin via the Golden Gate Ferry, wander Sausalito, then head up to Battery Spencer for the definitive Golden Gate composition. Shoot through golden hour and into blue hour, then back to the hotel.
Day 3: Cable Cars, Sea Lions & Telegraph Hill
Street photography and human interest. Part workshop, part San Francisco adventure.
Morning at Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39, leaning into the energy of the sea lions at K-Dock. (An ice cream stop at Ghirardelli Square is non-negotiable.) After lunch, we take the Powell-Hyde Cable Car to Lombard Street and shoot both the classic downward composition and the upward view most visitors never find.
The afternoon ends at Coit Tower and Telegraph Hill, with an optional descent down the Filbert Steps where the famous wild parrots of Telegraph Hill make regular appearances. Dinner in North Beach.

Day 4: City Hall, Golden Gate Park & Twin Peaks
Architecture, landscape, and a capstone golden hour that pulls the week together.
We'll ease into the morning with photo organizing and editing as a group. Instructors will be available for 1:1 photo review while also leading group discussion on composition and editing ideas. Past students consistently describe this session as the most valuable part of the trip.
In the early afternoon we drive to Golden Gate Park and the de Young Museum, whose copper-clad exterior patinates beautifully against the surrounding trees. We close at Twin Peaks with 180 degrees of Bay panorama and every technique from the week brought to bear.
Day 5: Farewell Morning
A relaxed close to a great week.
We'll meet in the morning for casual photo sharing and coffee at the hotel. A relaxed end to a great week. Goodbyes by noon as we conclude the photo-filled adventure.
Lodging:
The BPW has secured a group rate at Hotel Zoe Fisherman's Wharf (425 North Point St). Centrally located, walkable to our waterfront and neighborhood shooting days, and a convenient base for van departures on coastal and park days. Group rate rooms are available at approximately $250/night (subject to availability).
Participants are welcome to choose their own accommodations. Van pick-up details are shared after registration.
Lodging is not included in tuition and is booked separately by each participant. The BPW is not responsible for hotel reservations or special accommodation requests.
Recommended airports: SFO (San Francisco International) or OAK (Oakland International).

Tuition & Deposit
Total Price: $2,200 / Deposit: $400
A $400 deposit per participant is required at registration to reserve your spot. Full payment is due no later than 60 days before the workshop start date. Payment plans are available for the remaining balance, allowing you to spread payments over several months at no additional cost. Full details are available during the registration process.
Cancellations & Refunds
More than 90 days before the start date: Full refund of all fees paid, including your deposit, minus a $100 administrative fee.
90 to 61 days before the start date: Your deposit is non-refundable. Any additional payments made beyond the deposit are eligible for a 50% refund.
60 days or fewer before the start date: No refunds are available. Your registration and deposit can be applied toward a future workshop within 4 years.
If final payment is not received by the 60-day deadline, we'll send two email reminders requesting payment. If payment still isn't received, your spot will be forfeited and offered to a waitlisted student.
If a workshop is full, you're welcome to join our waitlist. Should a spot open up, we'll reach out by email in the order waitlist requests were received.

About the Instructors
Chris Sanchez: Founder of the BPW, Chris has spent more than 12 years taking photographs around the world for work and for fun. A lover of all things food-related and astrophotography, Chris usually has more snacks in his bag than lenses but still manages to get great photos. During the trip, if you need a snack... you know who to ask.
David Danzilio: David first picked up a proper camera in high school and instantly fell in love with photography. After originally joining the BPW community as a student, David has started to share his love of photography with others as an instructor. David's photographic interests span genres including astrophotography, abstract photography, architecture, landscapes, and taking pictures of his sleeping 18-year-old chihuahua Bennie. David lives in Somerville with his partner Stephen and their four-legged senior citizen.
Common Questions

The early days of the workshop are mostly flat and cover 1–2 miles at a relaxed pace. Later days include some stairs at the Presidio batteries and Twin Peaks, but the van is always available as an option. No pressure, no stigma. Sturdy walking shoes are the one thing we'd genuinely insist on.

Accompanying guests are welcome at meals and social moments but can't join class activities or ride in the workshop van. Reach out with any questions.

Of course. Students who drive themselves are responsible for their own parking and applicable entrance fees. Tuition is not adjusted.

San Francisco fog is famous for a reason. When visibility drops or conditions shift, we adapt. There are always photographs to make. Part of this workshop is learning to work with what the city gives you, and instructors always have creative alternatives ready.

You'll be in good company. Most of our travel workshop participants arrive solo, and the pre-trip Zoom call is where the ice usually breaks. By Day 1, familiar faces are already in place. The atmosphere here is relaxed, lighthearted, and welcoming. That's a deliberate choice, not an accident.
